This is a great question, although it is not really my area. Music of all types can definitely influence your mood, sometimes in complex ways (such as conjuring up memories). Although your enjoyment of music is subjective, it follows that it could potentially influence your mental health. Listening to music you find dreary and depressing could make you feel lower, and listening to music that cheers you up might make you feel better. Also, being engaged in a creative process such as making music, whatever genre it is, might also give you focus and purpose which could help with mental health. All my suggestions here are speculative though (I am making educated guesses) and I am not familiar with the literature.
