Thanks so much for your lovely words! I’m so glad you appreciate the research- it really means I’m doing my job if it means something to people.
The worst case I’ve seen is a hard one to hear- it was a man with frontotemporal dementia. This is when the frontal and temporal lobes, which are in the front and side of the brain, shrink (atrophy). Because of this he initially started having very bad short term memory and also started behaving rather strangely. He would leave his house in the middle of the night, doors wide open, and get lost and often venture into other peoples’ homes. Slowly he began to lose the ability to concentrate and this effected reading and writing. And then his speech started to go.
Eventually he was unable to walk, unable to move much of his body, unable to chew, unable to even turn over in bed- it was almost likely he was very slowly being trapped in his own body.
All of this stuff took years to happen, as this usually happens gradually before suddenly taking an extreme downward turn. it’s also an example of a rather extreme and sad case of dementia.
