It’s a bit of both, really.
On the one hand, it is quite difficult to have more than 5 people agree on how to design an experiment specifically, how to analyse the data, or what do they mean and how and to whom they should be presented to better get the message across. To cope with this problem, in larger research groups some people take leading role, and others provide support – when and how is demanded by the leading people.
On the other hand, having people that know a lot in slightly different areas related to the subject you’re investigating typically should be only beneficial to provide the best analysis of a problem, and so design the best possible experiment, and so on.
I think whenever I work as part of a larger group of scientists, I learn A LOT, and this makes better the research that I do in smaller groups, on projects i do with only a few people. So, as always in life – it’s about balance! 🙂
