After seeing how science has come up with cures to imaginably impossible diseases all the way back from the Black Plague to polio, I think we’ve learned there’s a cure for every illness. That doesn’t mean it’ll be easy- a lot of time, effort, resources and challenges go into developing a cure. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t out there- it’s just waiting to be discovered.

Nadine’s answer is good. Who knows what the future brings! We have literally already made some diseases extinct through science and we have a lot more of them on our hit list. This might sound like fantasy, but at some point in the far far future who knows what the human race will be like as a species. We may have developed technology to the point that we don’t need our bodies, at which point any and all diseases would become irrelevant and thus ‘cured’.

I agree with Nadine and Alex; we are currently in very exciting times, because we are finally crossing into studying “problems” (like “learning”) from all possible points of view at the same time – what we know about the mind (psychology), about the brain (neuroscience and brain imaging), the potential of technology (engineering and educational psychology) and important of health (medicine). We have almost tackled AIDS, which was unfathomable even 10 years ago; we are currently making huge strides in dealing with cancer and dementia – 2 major diseases of our aging population. At the same time, we are increasingly more and more helpless against bacteria as they mutate and become antibiotic resistant. So – we can never be sure, but I think we are not doing too bad. Biggest problem is ccurrently climate change.
